100,000 litres of fuel spilled Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, October 31, 2011
Initial estimates of the spill are in the 100,000-litre range, but the territorial government stated shortening days make it difficult for the petroleum product division to get an accurate volume estimate. The division was set to arrive in Resolute on Oct. 29 to help the community's fuel delivery contractor and others contain the spill and cleanup the contamination, stated Lorne Kusugak, the territorial minister of community and government services, in a press release. "I would like to assure the residents of Resolute Bay that this fuel spill will not affect the community's gasoline supply," he added. No injuries were reported. Kusugak, along with Quttiktuq MLA Ron Elliott, were to tour the site during a scheduled visit to Resolute on Oct. 29. An RCMP investigation is underway to determine the cause of the spill.
