IQALUIT
Five hunters were found safe at a camp south of Iqaluit after concerned family members called the Canadian Forces to initiate a search-and-rescue mission.

An 83-year-old elder, his son, and three young men aged 17 to 20 were found at their camp on Frobisher Bay, 130 km southeast of Iqaluit.

The hunters were set to return home the weekend of Oct. 22, but didn't. The Rescue Co-ordination Centre was contacted and sent two coast Guard icebreakers, carrying helicopters, to conduct a search. The hunters were found by searchers in the helicopters soon after the icebreakers arrived in the area.

Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokesperson Jeri Grychowski said bad weather on the weekend forced the hunters to stay at their camp longer than expected.

"They're all OK, and we haven't heard that they needed any assistance," she said.

The hunters planned to return on their own boat, she added.
