Dettah Chief Ed Sangris is facing a charge or charges for sexual assault, according to media reports Tuesday evening.

Sangris is reportedly with family in Saskatchewan and could not be reached for comment. Calls to RCMP media relations officer Kathy Law to confirm the charges were not returned at press time.

A media outlet is reporting that the chief has been charged for incidents allegedly taking place between 1988 and 1996. Sangris reportedly informed elders and members of the band council about the allegations last week. He is expected to appear in court Nov. 22.

Sangris was elected to a second term as chief in a landslide over challenger Nuni Sanspariel last June. Band councillor Mary Rose Sundberg has reportedly stepped in as acting chief.
