Power Corp investigates outage

Most of Yellowknife, with the exception of most of Old Town, lost power Sunday from approximately 3:33 to 3:52 p.m.

According to Robert Schmidt, director for the NWT Power Corporation's hydro region, the outage was the result of work being done at one of the corporation's sub stations.

"They were installing new remote transmitting units," Schmidt said. "There is an investigation under way, because this should not have caused an outage."

A Yellowknife Internet company is warning residents about a telephone scam this week.

On Tuesday, SSI Micro customer care representative William Ingarfield advised subscribers about someone phoning residents and telling them their computers are infected with a virus and asking for credit card information or access to their computers. According to Ingarfield, the caller identifies himself as a representative of the 'Canadian Internet Authority.'

"Once we found it was a recurring problem and not an isolated incident, we sent out the notice," said Fraser MacLean, technical agent with SSI Micro.
