A date has been set for a byelection to choose a new chief for Salt River First Nation.

Members of the Fort Smith-based band will cast ballots on Dec. 6.

"That's the day," said electoral officer Lynda Martin, explaining selecting a voting day is based on a process laid out in the band's customary election code.

Under the code, the electoral officer decides all dates in the byelection process, including the nomination deadline and the voting day.

Martin noted the notices of the byelection were posted as of Oct. 19 and the call for nominations will close on Nov. 3.

The electoral officer will not announce the names of candidates until after the nomination process closes.

"I'll do a poster at the appropriate time," she said.

The byelection became necessary with the resignation of Frieda Martselos, whose last day as chief was Sept. 9.

On the Dec. 6 voting day, there will be polls in Fort Smith and Edmonton at sites to be determined.

Band members will also be able to vote by mail-in ballots.

There will also be an advance poll for the byelection, Martin said. "But the date has not been determined yet."

Until a new chief is elected, Coun. Gloria Villebrun will serve as acting chief.

The winner of the byelection will complete the little over a year remaining in Martselos' term of office.
