A 20-year-old woman drowned in the Pangnirtung Fjord after falling off a boat on Oct. 21.

Samantha Battye had just boarded a boat about one km away from the hamlet when she fell in the water and the current pulled her away shortly after midnight Friday morning, stated the RCMP.

As attempts to locate the victim failed, the RCMP requested help from the local search and rescue team as well as volunteers from the Canadian Rangers.

The victim was located at 7 a.m. on the shore of the fjord, stated the RCMP.

She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Pangnirtung Health Centre.

According to police, alcohol was a factor.
