Ready to rock in Rankin Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, October 19, 2011
The Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association (RIMHA) decided to unify the name and colours of teams representing the community from novice to midget, as well as female hockey. The new jerseys are sharp and bold, featuring the same colour scheme as the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, with Rankin's famous Inuksuk being the focus of the crest. As a play on the Inuksuk logo, Rankin minor hockey teams will now be known as the Rankin Rock. President Ken Beardsall said RIMHA put out the call for ideas on a new logo through word of mouth, Facebook and a newspaper ad. He said when all was said and done, the executive members decided the idea that made the most sense was the combination of the Inuksuk logo and Rankin Rock moniker. "We hired Jonathan Cruz in Iqaluit to design the logo based on our ideas," said Beardsall. "After he did his first draft, RIMHA board member Mikki Adams had the idea of a player bursting out of the Inuksuk, and that looked really cool after it was added. "A number of Nunavut communities use the same name for their team, like the Blizzard in Baker Lake and Iqaluit or the Grizzlies in Kugluktuk, and that provides a kind of identity for the teams. "So, as we move forward, having the same name for all our hockey teams will carry on Rankin's hockey tradition and provide a little more identity for our players." Beardsall said Jim Ramsay's Arctic Connections had the home and away jerseys made in Winnipeg. He said the jerseys were unveiled this past Thursday and the initial response has been positive. "Everyone seems to find the new logo pretty sharp and, since Rankin's colours are black, gold and white, it was unanimously agreed the Penguins' colour scheme seemed to fit the best with that. "We ordered almost 200 new jerseys and matching socks, so it's an expensive project. "We're trying to get some sponsorships from the business community to help us with the cost."
