'To good to waste'

Waste Reduction Week

Ecology North is asking NWT residents to prepare for National Waste Reduction Week, which is taking place Oct. 17 to 23. The week's theme this year is "Too good to waste" which will emphasize the importance of retaining natural resources and using alternative methods for garbage disposal.

Ecology North has daily themes planned for the week and is encouraging schools, businesses and individuals to find ways of doing the same.

A Downtown Demo Day with a free waste assessment for the first five businesses to contact Ecology North will take place Wednesday, while composting and recycling workshops will occur at local schools.

Elder found after two days

Coral Harbour - An 81yearold elder from Coral Harbour is back safely in his community after being missing on the land for almost two days this past week.

The elder left the community on Oct. 10 on his ATV to go hunting caribou and ptarmigan on his own.

When he didn't return when he was supposed to that evening, Coral search and rescue launched a search for the elder on Oct. 11.

He was found around noon on Oct. 12, about 30km north of the community.

The elder was reported to be in good health when found, and was immediately transported to the Coral health centre for observation.

More than 100 people were reported to have been involved with the search on the morning of Oct. 12.

Puck ready for minor hockey

Rankin Inlet - The annual registration drive for players wishing to play in the Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association (RIMHA) during the 2011-12 season wrapped up this past week.

RIMHA held its annual general meeting at the arena on Oct. 13 and a general coaches meeting will be held this week.

A senior hockey official's recertification meeting was also held recently in Rankin.

Confirmed to, once again, be calling the games in Rankin this year are senior officials Max MacDonald, Donald Clark, Darrell Greer, Justin Merritt, David Tulugak, Damian MacInnis and David Clark.

As of press time, no request for a junior official clinic had been made for the upcoming season.

Hunters concerned about over-harvesting

Coral Harbour - Hunters in Coral Harbour are worried the Southampton Island caribou herd could be over-harvested.

Increased hunting of animals from the herd seems to be taking place because of the shortage of tuktu on Baffin island. Coral hunters are harvesting a large number of the animals to sell or give to people in the Baffin.

One report from the community had upwards of 2,000 pounds of caribou meat being shipped through cargo every second day.

Special Halloween performance

Arviat - Director Gord Billard has announced his student thespians are working hard on rehearsing a special Halloween performance for Arviat on Oct. 25 and 26 at the John Arnalukjuak High School theatre.

The show will be comprised of four skits featuring themes of comedy and horror.

There will be plenty of young vampires and zombies on stage, with the themes from Ghost Busters and The Addams Family also being performed, as well as the dance routine from the late Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

The students won't have much time to catch their breath after the Halloween performance, as rehearsals for the annual Christmas play are expected to start shortly thereafter.
