INUVIK
Last week Inuvik RCMP charged a former teacher at two Inuvik schools with seven charges related to sexual offences.

Hugues Latour, a resident of Inuvik, has been charged with one count each of possessing child pornography; making child pornography; sexual assault; touching a minor for a sexual purpose; unlawful confinement; assault; and failing to comply with conditions of a prior conviction.

The Inuvik detachment received a call on Oct. 9 related to a complaint of a sexual assault. Staff Sgt. Wayne Norris said there are multiple victims and the offences occurred within the last month.

"We hope this is it, but if there is anyone else out in the community or if anyone knows about incidences of Criminal Code offences, we ask everyone to come forward," Norris said. "We encourage parents to be aware of daily activities of their children and who they are hanging out with."

Latour has lived in Inuvik since 2007 and taught Grade 5/6 at Sir Alexander Mackenzie and worked as Samuel Hearne Secondary School's French immersion teacher. He has not worked at either school since the winter of 2010.

Latour is also a filmmaker whose work has been showcased at the Dawson City International Short Film Festival.

Latour is in custody and will attend a bail hearing on Oct. 20 in Yellowknife Territorial Court.
