RANKIN INLET
Parents came out in droves to register their kids for another season with Aqsarniit Ujauttaq (Northern Lights Gymnastics) at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin Inlet this past week.

The program, which began in 2004, features recreational, pre-competitive and competitive gymnastics.

About 160 participants ranging in age from 11 months to adult took part in the 2010-11 season. Head coach and club founder Lisa Kresky said last year's program saw a recreational competition held in Rankin, while the competitive gymnasts travelled to two competitions and the pre-competitive group one.

"The June competition in Orillia, Ont., was a definite highlight of the year because kids from both my pre-comp and competitive groups went," said Kresky.

"I was pleased by the kids' awesome performance.

"We won a ton of medals and had a couple of people finish first all-around.

"We have limited training time compared to the clubs in Ontario we were competing against, but we really held our own and the judges were impressed with our showing."

Although the club's equipment is holding up nicely, Kresky said it's in real need of additional gear to keep up with the club's continued growth.

She said if she could have one wish for the Rankin club, it would be to have its own gym.

"If we had our own gym, we wouldn't have to be always setting up and tearing down the equipment.

"That's very time - consuming and it's very heavy labour."

Kresky said it's hard to predict the number of participants the club will have each year due to people moving out from, and in to, the community.

She said she expects this year's numbers to be relatively close to the 160 members the club had in 2010-11.

"My competitive (14) and pre-competitive (nine) groups are already full, so it remains to be seen how many we

have for recreational.

"I have a few more people helping now, so we can accommodate some growth.

"Some people are always out of town or miss registration, but we allow a few extra days to register.

"So we won't know our final numbers for this season until, probably, the end of this week."
