Tommy Kalluk, 42, and Noah Kalluk, 46, had been missing for three days. The brothers left Arctic Bay July 28 around noon in a six-metre boat to go seal hunting. They were reported missing to RCMP on July 29 after they failed to return to the community.

"(It's) tough news for everyone," said Noire Iqalukjuak, Arctic Bay's mayor. "Everybody knew them. They were close friends to us ... Both are missed already."

An RCMP plane spotted the capsized boat in Admirality Inlet on Sunday at around 4 a.m., according to an Aug. 1 RCMP press release. An hour later, the Canadian Coast Guard ship Terry Fox located and recovered the boat. The press release states the vessel had to "fight through the waves." At the time of the accident, it is estimated the inlet was experiencing ocean swells ranging from five to six metres as a result of high winds.

The boat appeared to have experienced engine trouble, the press release further stated.

Const. Angelique Dignard of the Iqaluit RCMP said the boat was found capsized by the coast guard. When the crew turned the boat over, one of the men was found inside the cabin and the other was found inside the deck area.

Dignard said the cause of death has not yet been determined, but that foul play isn't suspected. She added that it is important to remind boaters to be properly prepared with safety equipment such as flotation devices and flares as well as communications equipment to contact the authorities for help. According to the press release, there were no flotation devices nor emergency equipment located at the scene when the boat was recovered.

Funeral arrangements for the men were not known at press time.
