The young man was assaulted and robbed of cash around 4 p.m.

The victim was first treated at Stanton Territorial Hospital and then because of the seriousness of his injuries, was medevaced to Edmonton for further treatment.

Police reported on Monday afternoon that they had a suspect, but announced later in the day that they had released a 22-year-old man without laying any charges.

Yellowknife RCMP Sgt. Bruce McGregor declined to comment on the exact nature of the injuries sustained by the victim.

"It is still under investigation so I can't release that information. There were serious injuries, serious enough to warrant being medevaced out to Edmonton," said McGregor, adding that the victim is currently in stable condition.

Keith Wong, who was inside the post office when the attack occurred, saw the victim bleeding outside shortly afterward.

"It certainly is a shame about what happened but it is a fact of life and there is not too much we can do about it. We cannot let them chase us off the streets," Wong said of the attack.

Although no one has been charged, McGregor said it does not appear to be a random attack at this stage in the investigation.

There were some photographs taken during the attack and robbery that the RCMP are examining.

McGregor thanked members of the public for their co-operation in assisting the investigation so far.

He would not comment on the amount of money stolen from the victim due to the ongoing investigation.
