Rotating power outages in Iqaluit Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, August 29, 2011
The corporation stated an "unpredictable and unpreventable engine component failure" occurred at 12:46 a.m. on Aug. 29, leaving the city's largest generator inoperable. This is restricting the maximum generating capacity to 5.2 megawatts. Iqaluit's current peak load is 7.5 megawatts.
The corporation issued a rotating power outage schedule. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29, Happy Valley, Tundra Valley, the Road to Nowhere and Apex will have power while the downtown area, Plateau subdivision, Justice building and the Nunavut Arctic College will be in the dark. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the situation will be reversed. The rotation is every four hours.
NorthMart, public health and the surrounding area will be on a two-hour rotation, as will Arctic Ventures and the surrounding area, at opposite times.
"QEC is asking people conserve as much energy as possible by minimizing their use of household electronics, appliances and lights while they have access to power," stated the corporation in a press release. "The city of Iqaluit has asked those businesses and residences on trucked water to conserve their water."
The corporation states it anticipates power to go back to normal on Aug. 31.
