TALOYOAK/SPENCE BAY
Three overdue hunters were spotted safe and sound by the Canadian Coast Guard, waiting for the tide to head back to Taloyoak.

A helicopter from the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier spotted the trio camping at Saguak Inlet at 3 p.m. on Aug. 17, just under four hours after they received the call they were overdue, said Chris Armour, maritime co-ordinator for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton, Ont.

"They were waiting out the tide to proceed back home. They had ample food and fuel," he said.

A 21-year-old female and two males, ages 28 and 20, had left Taloyoak on Aug. 11 to hunt in the Lord Mayor Bay area of the eastern Boothia Peninsula.

When they had not returned by Aug. 14, they were reported as overdue. The trio was carrying a high-frequency radio but the mountainous area prevented their signal from reaching home base, said Armour.

He added the hunters anticipated it would take two to three days for them to head back to Taloyoak as they had four portages to cross during their approximately 38-kilometre trip.
