Kids beaded, peddled around in bumper cars, got their faces painted, did some painting themselves and did lots of drawing at a free, family fun-time event for one-to-eight year olds and their parents in the lower Center Square Mall on Wednesday.

It was the second such event the mall has hosted in as many weeks, and it was a hit for kids and parents alike, alleviating some of the boredom that can be associated with long summer days.

“This should be every other day," said one mother, Shoovenai Atigikyoak. "It's great to have somewhere to go rather than be cooped up at home.”

Tracy-Ann Gentles, mother to four-year-old Zoi and two-year-old Alexis, said the kids had been looking forward to coming all week.

“We were here last week, at the first one, and they really looked forward to it," she said. "They kept asking me if it was Wednesday yet.

"It seems well organized and there is enough for each child to play with everything.”

Gentles' daughter Zoi Hill-Gentles said she liked the "bumper cars" best, little toy cars kids can sit in.

Meanwhile, Iraj Ahmed, 5, was busy making herself a bracelet from the beads provided. “I liked making the necklace and bracelet the best,” she confirmed.

Lower Centre Square is owned by Huntingdon Real Estate Investment Trust. An employee, who asked not to be identified, said the new fun-time events are all about providing a positive environment at the mall – saying the next event is scheduled to take place Aug. 17 and that, as time allows, the mall will stage more of them.

Making use of retail space that might otherwise sit empty, like the old Head Gear store where the event took place, was definitely appreciated by the parents who came Wednesday.

“It was very good for the kids, and they are having a lot of fun,” said Touseef Leenah.
