This is Johnston's first official visit to Nunavut.

The governor general and his wife will arrive in Iqaluit on Aug. 15 and will be welcomed by Commissioner Edna Elias with a community feast at the Arctic Winter Games Arena.

They will subsequently visit Qikiqtarjuaq, Repulse Bay, Kugaaruk and Resolute. It will be the first time a governor general has visited Qikiqtarjuaq and Kugaaruk.

"As a vital part of our collective history, there is much we can learn from the Inuit culture," stated Johnston in a press release. "My wife, Sharon, and I look forward to meeting with Nunavummiut families and community leaders, to hearing their stories about what Canada means to them and to learning of the challenges they face in preserving their heritage."

While in Resolute, Johnston will observe training exercises as part of Operation Nanook, meet with residents and visit the Polar Continental Shelf Program.
