Huskies try for territorial title
Inuvik fastpitch team heads to Yellowknife to defend championshipSamantha Stokell Northern News Services Published Thursday, July 7, 2011
In 2010 the team won the NWT Men's Fastpitch Championship over Slade's Fire Prevention Expos of Yellowknife, and they hope to win again in 2011. The tournament starts on July 16. "Everyone's positive and ready to go,"said pitcher Gord Kasook. "We have to work on some things, but I can't wait to get back down there and do it again." After the territorial championships, the team will travel to Stonewall, Man., for the Western Canadian Men's B Fastpitch Championship, which starts on Aug. 11. While the Western Championship is a big deal, the territorials are their goal for this year. "We're not looking past that at all," he said. "Territorials is always No. 1 because we're the defending champs." The team just returned from the Yukon where they competed at the Whitehorse Men's Fastpitch Championship and finished in a close second to the home-team Giants. The tournament, which finished on June 26, had the Inuvik Huskies come back from a score of 11-2 in only the second inning. But the Huskies weren't about to lay down and quit, and managed to get the score back to 11-6 by the fifth inning. The Giants extended their lead to 12-6 and by the time the seventh inning rolled around, the scoreline read 14-12. The Huskies had two runners on base in their half of the seventh inning with Kevin McLeod up to bat. But he couldn't come through, giving the Giants the win. Moran said the key to staying close was playing "small ball." "We learned that from Owen Rowe and Andy Tereposky," he said. "Make sure we get runners on base and move them over by bunting or on passed balls and then drive them in. We just chipped away at their lead and the guys were all in the game. Mickey (Ipana) kept telling the boys we could do it." Pitching-wise, Kasook was the star of the show for the Huskies as he did the lion's share of the work on the mound, even tossing two one-hitters over the course of the tournament. Keeping the games close was the goal for Kasook, but he said he wasn't thinking about one-hitters. "The one-hitters were great," he said. "Nothing special. I just threw like I normally threw." The NWT Men's Fastpitch Championship runs July 16-17.
