ARVIAT - The hamlet of Arviat was grieving the tragic drowning death of a young person in the community this past week.

A police press release stated officers from the Arviat detachment of the RCMP received a call on July 11 concerning a young person who was reported to have become submerged in the water reservoir while swimming with friends.

Witnesses at the scene informed the RCMP the young person was having issues swimming in the deep area of the reservoir, and then suddenly disappeared before anyone could reach the area to help.

A search of the lake was organized in the area where the young person was last seen.

The youth was located approximately 40 minutes later by the search team.

The young person was taken to the Arviat health centre and later pronounced dead.

As of press time Arviat police were continuing their investigation into the matter, but no foul play is suspected.

The RCMP has not yet released the name of the deceased.
