Forty-nine boats raced on July 2 from Fisherman's Wharf to Escarpment Creek, south of Enterprise on the Hay River, with speeds topping 225 kph. The morning run covered 79 km, while the return in the afternoon covered 67 km.

The races were witnessed by hundreds of spectators at various vantage points along the river.

The racers came from Canada, the United States, Mexico and New Zealand.

On the day before the race, the jet boats were featured in the Canada Day parade in Hay River and the public were invited to Fisherman's Wharf for an up-close look at the vessels.

After Hay River, the racers headed to the Alberta communities of Peace River, Grande Prairie and Whitecourt for the remaining events of the marathon, which concluded on July 9.
