The monument, which was constructed in 2009, replaced one that stood for many years in Conibear Park.

Karen Scott, president of the Legion's Branch 239, said the old cenotaph in the municipal park was disintegrating, being vandalized and had become a safety hazard.

"When the decision was made to rebuild the cenotaph, the branch felt that relocation to Legion property on a new and fitting site would provide the security and respect due our cenotaph and the men and women whose sacrifice it represents," Scott said.

The plaque from the old cenotaph is included on the new monument. Another plaque was also added to remember Canadians who gave their lives as United Nations' peacekeepers.

A cenotaph is a monument in honour of someone who has died and whose remains lie elsewhere.

The June 25 date was chosen for the dedication ceremony because it was close to the June 6 anniversary of D-Day and the end of Canada's combat mission in Afghanistan.
