Shaganappy consultation date change

The date of the next public consultation with NPR Limited Partnership, formerly known as Northern Properties REIT, about the proposed development near Shaganappy Apartments has been changed to June 17.

There will be two meetings, both at Northern United Place. The first is from noon until 2 p.m. and the other begins at 6 p.m. Yellowknife residents are invited to take part.

Site and floor plans for the proposed 58-unit development are available on the NPR website.

Celebrity auction cancelled

The NWT Disabilities Council has cancelled this year's Mad Hatter Spring Gala & Auction.

The popular yearly charity event was scheduled for Friday June 3, but was cancelled Monday due to poor ticket sales and very few donations.

The organization said all vendors, donors and ticket holders will be issued a full refund.

Offshore drilling review

The public is invited to take part in an information session dealing with Arctic offshore drilling Thursday at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

Offshore drilling in the Canadian Arctic is regulated by the National Energy Board, which is currently reviewing the safety and environmental requirements for offshore drilling. As part of the review, the board is inviting the public to join the discussion tomorrow afternoon between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. or evening between 7 and 9 p.m.

Communications survey

The city is asking residents to help it establish a communications plan.

There is an online survey posted on the city's website that asks residents, among other things, how they stay up-to-date on city issues.

The deadline to fill it out is June 17.

Public session

A public session put on by the Stanton Territorial Health Authority and includes medical and legal professionals to talk about documenting end-of-life choices and how to discuss post-death wishes with family and friends. Seating is limited and those interested can call the health authority to reserve a seat.

Young entrepreneurs

Coral Harbour/Moncton, N.B. - Grade 12 students Norman Nakoolak Jr. and Kayla Maclean of Sakku School in Coral Harbour took part in the Federal Development Bank's E-Spirit program in Moncton, N.B., this past month.

The E-Spirit program encourage youth to think about business opportunities in their communities, and to do business plans for competition with youth across Canada.

Busy youth

Arviat - It was a busy month of May for numerous youth in the community of Arviat.

Students at John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHH) teamedup with their counterparts in Lloydminster, Alta. and Sask., to conduct a highly successful exchange program, while JAHH student Vayda Kaviok left for Quebec City this past Monday to compete in the national Skills Canada Competition.

Finally, students in the JAHH Drama Club began their production of The Bright Blue Mailbox Suicide Note earlier this week.

A special VIP showing was held on May 30 before the show began playing for the schools and general public the following night.

Charge dropped

Baker Lake - The charge of possession of liquor without a permit against Baker Lake MLA Moses Aupaluktuq was withdrawn by the Crown this past week.

Defense lawyer Patrick Smith said the charge was withdrawn because Aupaluktuq was in compliance with Nunavut's Liquor Act by holding a permit issued by the Government of Nunavut as required by law.

In a brief press release issued to Kivalliq News, Aupaluktuq stated he recognizes the need for greater information and education to the public and, to that end, will be making a $300 charitable donation to a local alcohol organization.

Date announced

Rankin Inlet - The Kivalliq Science Educator's Community has identified Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet as the school to host the 2012 Kivalliq Regional Science Fair.

MUI will host the event from March 1619 in 2012.

Cadets compete

Repulse Bay/Rankin Inlet - Senna Oolooyuk of Rankin Inlet and Anita Kopak of Repulse Bay were among the four cadets who put in a strong showing while representing Nunavut's Eastern Arctic Area team at the National Cadet Marksmanship Championship in Whitehorse this past month.
