RADILIH KOE'/FORT GOOD HOPE - A Fort Good Hope man who escaped from police on June 7 was found on June 9 and returned to custody after a two-day search. The RCMP searched the wilderness but found Morris Charney, 25, in a Fort Good Hope residence on the afternoon of June 9.

Charney escaped from police custody in the late afternoon of June 7 while being held in custody in Fort Good Hope. According to Cpl. Wesley Heron, Charney escaped while he was waiting to be transported to Yellowknife for a show cause hearing in relation to criminal charges he was facing for assault.

Heron said Charney broke free of police, and disappeared into the wilderness outside of the community.

According to Heron, one RCMP member gave chase, and a tried to catch Charney, but he managed to evade the officer before he "disappeared into the bush."

The RCMP searched for Charney with the assistance of the G Division RCMP dog service and additional police resources that were brought in to help.

The search for Charney by police continued until he was found in good health in the Fort Good Hope residence on Thursday, Heron said.

According to a press release by the RCMP, residents of Fort Good Hope also assisted in the mission to find Charney and return him to custody.

Police have resumed plans to transport Charney to Yellowknife to answer to the original charge of assault, and he may face other charges in relation to his flight from custody, Heron said.

The investigation into the matter involving Charney is ongoing, he said.
