SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Ren Dyck said it was like a scene out of the reality television show COPS early Saturday morning when he saw a new Ford F-150 pick-up truck race across his neighbour's lawn out of control, ram into two large rocks and knock them into the side of the house.

"If it wasn't for the rocks, he would have ended up in the kitchen," said Dyck, who was working on his computer at 1:30 a.m. in his Driscoll Road residence.

He said he heard an engine revving and peeked out the window to see the truck crash into the rocks and then back up onto Driscoll Road and continue toward Niven Drive.

"The front tires were blown out on the truck and you could actually see a shower of sparks as he went down Niven Drive, at which point in time I was on the phone with the RCMP dispatcher saying 'Yeah, you need to get over here, there's a problem,'" he said with a laugh.

"It's pretty exciting stuff for our street - it's usually pretty quiet."

On Wednesday, RCMP issued a press release stating an 18-year-old Yellowknife man had been arrested at a home on Niven Drive near the scene of the accident. His driving privileges have been suspended for 90 days, and he has been charged with impaired driving and leaving the scene of an accident. The driver will appear in territorial court on June 28, according to the release.

Dyck said the owner cleaned up some of the mess since the incident; however, two long skid marks, about five metres long, can still be seen stretching across the yard from the road and through what used to be a small garden.

A pile of mud remains where the truck hit the two large rocks about three metres from the house, causing a large dent and two cracks on the grey siding.

The owner of the house could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
