Taxi strikes two pedestrians Nicole Veerman Northern News Services Published Wednesday, May 18, 2011
The women were 18 and 42 years old. The 18-year-old woman sat on the curb outside Chic Chik Boarderline in tears after the accident as she watched the other woman being strapped to a stretcher. Both women were transported to hospital by ambulance and treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to an RCMP press release. They were released a short time later. While paramedics responded to the women, an RCMP officer photographed the front-end of a Diamond Cabs vehicle as the 56-year-old driver stood by and watched. He was later taken away in handcuffs. According to the RCMP press release, the taxi was turning left onto 49 Street from 51 Avenue when it struck the women, who were crossing the street. The cab driver was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He has since been released from custody and will appear in court on June 12. A supervisor with Diamond Cabs, who asked not to be named, said the driver will continue operating a cab at least until his court date. "He's driving until he's proven guilty and that's done in court."
