IQALUIT - An assault charge against former Pangnirtung MLA Adamee Komoartok was withdrawn during a May 6 court appearance in Iqaluit.

Komoartok, 57, was charged with assault causing bodily harm March 6 in Iqaluit. His wife Penena Mosesee, 53, was charged with assault on the same day. Her next court appearance will be in Pangnirtung on May 17.

Komoartok resigned from his position as MLA on March 15 after members of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly voted unanimously on March 10 to suspend him from his duties.

Constituents in the Pangnirtung riding will elect a new MLA in a byelection on Sept. 12.
