SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Yellowknife RCMP are attributing the recent cold snap as a contributing factor in the death of a 22-year-old man on Monday morning.

Const. Kathy Law wouldn't disclose where the man was found, but she did say an ambulance took the man to Stanton Territorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead by doctors.

Law didn't know what time the man was taken to Stanton, although she did confirm the RCMP received a report from the coroner's office at 6:30 a.m. of a deceased male at the hospital.

An investigation by the RCMP's general investigation unit, major crimes unit and its forensic identification section determined that foul play wasn't involved in the man's death.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature at 6 a.m. on April 11 was -21 C with a windchill of -27 C. while Law wouldn't say where the man was found, she did clarify he wasn't homeless.

The RCMP isn't releasing the man's identity at the request of the family. Cathy Menard, chief coroner of the NWT, couldn't be reached for comment by press time.
