Territorial nutritionist devises instructions for 10 nutritious meals Jeanne Gagnon Northern News Services Published Monday, March 14, 2011
Territorial nutritionist Jennifer Wakegijiq said they developed the 10 recipes at the request of communities that wanted more opportunities to learn cooking skills and more healthy recipe ideas. The recipes feature nutrients Nunavummiut could use more of, and teach cooking skills people need or would like to learn. They also use foods people have access to, and include country foods or ideas on how to include them, she added. The recipes focus on the main meals and include a variety of soups and stews. "We're happy with the recipes," said Wakegijiq. "We hope they're going to be as popular with Nunavummiut at large as they were with the people that helped us chose them." Community workers tested the recipes with their families and cooking groups and said they were delicious, according to information from the territorial government. The GN filmed Rebecca Veevee preparing the recipes in Iqaluit, and they will be distributed probably this fall to the communities by video and in print with photographs. On the set, Veevee prepared caribou stew with potatoes, turnips, barley and beef broth. She said she wanted to help as she sees many people eating too much fast food. "I want to help people eat healthy food," she said. "If you make your own, (it's) cheaper and healthier."
