SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A 19-year-old Whati man who forcibly confined and assaulted a woman with a belt, among other offences, received 10 months and 10 days in jail on March 9.

Terrence James Romie, 19, who was sentenced in Whati last week, pleaded guilty on Sept. 8, 2010 to breaking into the Whati Community Government building and the Whati Community Store on Oct. 31, 2009. He also pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000 in both places. He received eight months in jail.

He received an additional month in jail for assaulting a Whati woman between June 1 and June 30, 2010. He was sentenced to an additional six months when on July 15, 2010, he confined the same woman, assaulted her with a belt and threatened her.

Romie was released on July 19, 2010, after posting $500 bail. He broke the terms of his release from jail by missing his curfew between Oct. 27 and Oct. 31, 2010.

He has been in custody since Nov. 1, 2010. He received four months and 20 days credit for the time he spent in jail prior to his sentencing.

Besides the jail term, Judge Bernadette Schmaltz also banned Romie from using firearms for five years and gave him two years of probation.
