SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A 24-year-old Yellowknife man was pronounced dead at the scene of an industrial accident yesterday morning on Robertson Drive.

"At this point, we have no reason to suspect anything other than an accident was the cause of the incident," said Sgt. Brad Kaeding of the Yellowknife RCMP. "It appears he was working on heavy equipment."

Kaeding said the man's name wasn't being released because the next of kin and his co-workers haven't been notified. He also wouldn't disclose the name of the business, although Kaeding said it was located near the Con Mine property.

According to an RCMP press release, the man was apparently working alone under the box of a dump truck inside a large mechanical garage off Robertson Drive in the Con Mine area. A co-worker found him trapped under the box of the truck at around 10 a.m. RCMP believe the accident to have occured sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

A press release from the Yellowknife fire department said a command vehicle, a medic and a rescue vehicle responded to the scene at 10:20 a.m. to "a request for assistance in the rescue of an unresponsive patient entrapped in a piece of heavy machinery." According to the RCMP, though rescue personnel were summoned, the man had already succumbed to his injuries.

Kaeding added the RCMP is investigating in conjunction with the coroner's office, and the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission is also investigating the accident.
