SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Jersey colours decorated Boston Pizza Sunday evening as the 45th annual football face-off known as the Super Bowl got underway. Depending on what colours they had on and who was watching, eyes would shift to the door to see, and judge, who was entering as friend or foe.

Nick Rivet donned a black and gold Steelers jersey because his preferred team, the Miami Dolphins, just didn't cut it this time. Rivet said he squares his attention on American football when the CFL comes to a close.

"Yeah, (American football) is a little more competitive in the long run, there's more talent and the rules are slightly different. Once the CFL is over, it's a very exciting thing to watch at the end of the season," he said.

Rivet said as well as being enthralled with the game, he was keen to watch something else on the flat screens.

"I'm looking forward to the commercials. They're a main event here every year," he said.

Marie Condon sat glued to the screen in an orange BC Lions jersey. She said choosing who to root for took research and careful consideration.

"I basically just googled and studied the stats of the teams coming up to the Super Bowl. Number 12 is Rodgers, the quarterback for Green Bay and 12 is the quarterback for the BC Lions. It's a natural fit," she said.

"The Steelers came in very strong and Green Bay were the underdogs coming in so

I'm cheering for the underdogs."

Nearing the end of the first half, Boston Pizza server Jen Smith began regretting her decision to hand over her neutral referee jersey to a coworker in exchange for a green and yellow Packers' one.

"I chose to wear the referee jersey at first because I wanted to stay neutral," she said.

She said although she was concerned wearing the Packers jersey would affect tips acquired from Steelers' fans, she was on the Packers' side.

"I do want Green Bay to win. Sounds like a popular team," she said.

And they did, 31-25.
