CRTC ruling has no effect on NorthwesTel rates

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

A recent decision by Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission regarding the prices paid for bandwidth by small Internet providers will not result in any price hikes for customers of NorthwesTel, says a NorthwesTel spokesperson.

Last week, the CRTC announced it will allow major Internet providers to change the prices they charge for wholesale data sold to independent providers, such as NorthwesTel. The move could stifle competition and small business, critics have said.

But NorthwesTel customers in the NWT and Nunavut need not sorry, said Sunny Patch.

"No, it doesn't (have an impact,)" she said. "We have been using a usage-based billing model with our customers - both our residential and our wholesale customers. This won't change any of our rates or the way our rates are structured."
