NUNAVUT - Nunavut's hockey star Jordin Tootoo can now lace up his skates and hit the ice for practices as of Jan. 31.

Tootoo of Rankin Inlet, a rightwinger with the Nashville Predators, checked himself into the National Hockey League's substance abuse and behavioural health program for alcohol abuse on Dec. 27.

The NHL issued a press release on Jan. 31 saying the athlete is allowed to practise with the team but cannot play in games or travel with them on road trips.

He will continue to receive treatment from two doctors.

Tootoo is in his seventh season with the Predators and scored four goals and six assists in 32 games prior to entering rehab.

In late December, his mother Rose said his family were grateful for the decision he made.
