Sewage lagoon study meeting

LIIDLII KUE/FORT SIMPSON - Ken Johnson, an engineer with AECOM Canada, has been hired by the Village of Fort Simpson to undertake a $40,700 pre-feasibility study on a sewage lagoon for the community. He was in Fort Simpson Monday, Feb. 14 meeting to discuss the project.

The purpose of the study is to identify a location, prove the suitability of the site and provide the technical information needed to assist in the final design of any sewage lagoon.

Mayor Sean Whelly says the project is critical for reducing Fort Simpson's impact on the environment and would likely create jobs for the community.

"If a lagoon moves ahead in the near future, it will definitely create an opportunity for work by local contractors and residents," says Whelly.

Fort Simpson is under a Fisheries and Oceans compliance order to reduce the toxicity of the village's sewage treatment discharge into the Mackenzie River.
