Teachers accept tentative agreement

NUNAVUT

Nunavut teachers have voted in favour of a tentative agreement with the territorial government, ending 20 months of negotiations.

Ninety per cent of the territory's 740 kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers voted, with 95 per cent of them choosing to accept the agreement.

Nunavut Teachers' Association president Robin Langill said this was the highest rate of acceptance for any tentative agreement he can remember in his 25-year career.

"They (teachers) have very clearly stated their position. It's been a long, difficult process. It's been 20 months in the making. I'm confident the end is in sight," he said. "There are incremental increases in the salary. The bilingual language allowance has being retained."

He added they are working to get the agreement signed off as quickly as possible in the best interest of everyone involved.

Nunavut teachers have been without a contract since June 30, 2009.
