City's head planner fired

Northern News Services
Published Monday, January 31, 2011

IQALUIT - Michele Bertol, the city's senior director of planning and lands, was fired on Jan. 26. Bertol had been working for the city for the last seven years.

"I am fired; that is the reality and there is nothing else. I don't want to comment," she said on Jan. 27.

Iqaluit's chief administrative officer John Hussey said there is no link between Bertol's dismissal and matters discussed at the council meeting on Jan. 25.

"That's all I can tell you, it's an employment-related issue," said Hussey.

In the meantime Arif Sayani, former assistant to the planning and lands department, will look after projects in progress, Hussey said.

Sayani had been serving as the acting manager of public works while Frank Ford, who holds the position, was on sick leave.

Hussey said Ford is back on the job and the city's human resources department is preparing a job description and will start the recruitment process to fill Bertol's former position.
