Good year for Arctic shipper

NUNAVUT
Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping had a banner summer shipping season this year.

According to Suzanne Paquin, president and CEO of the company, four vessels carried over 180,000 cubic metres of cargo to 48 local communities in Nunavut and northern Quebec. The cargo numbers were up from last year, when mineral exploration spending in Nunavut dropped from previous years, said Paquin.

Activity at Baffinland Iron Mines' Mary River iron ore project, and claims of Arctic sovereignty by the federal government, helped push numbers up this year, she said.

"There was an increased volume from the federal government concerning sovereignty. I can't give you a specific number, but that did help."
