Drunken man ditches van

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A Yellowknife man more than three times over the legal alcohol limit abandoned his van but couldn't avoid a 30-day jail sentence and $337.50 in fines.

On Dec. 15, Crown prosecutor Marc Lecorre told territorial court that on July 25, 2010, at 6:20 a.m., the Yellowknife RCMP responded to a call in Ndilo that a vehicle had left the road. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 2006 gold Dodge Caravan stuck in the ditch still running.

They also found the owner of the vehicle, William Liske, standing on the side of the road "highly intoxicated."

Lecorre said Liske, 60, had been drinking at a party and tried to drive home. While at the RCMP detachment, Liske registered two breathalyzer samples of 270 milligrams and 260 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood - both readings were more than three times the legal limit of 80 mg.

Liske pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while impaired and failing to have valid vehicle registration on Nov. 3.

Given the "disturbing" breathalyzer readings and Liske's account that he "blacked out" at the time of the offence, Lecorre argued Liske posed a danger to himself and the public. He asked for a 30-day jail sentence and a two-year driving prohibition.

Abdul Khan, Liske's lawyer, requested his client be fined $1,800 to $2,000 and given a two-year driving prohibition, but no jail time. He told the court Liske has been receiving counselling for his

alcohol issues at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

Liske had a previous impaired driving conviction six-and-a-half years ago, for which he received a $700 fine and a one-year driving prohibition.

Judge Robert Gorin took the Crown's recommendation and sentenced Liske to 30 days in jail for impaired driving to be served on weekends to accommodate his work schedule.

Liske also received a two-year driving prohibition and a $50 fine for the driving offence. For having invalid vehicle registration, Liske received $287.50 in fines.
