The former executive director of the Qikiqtani Truth Commission was elected with 377 votes on Dec. 13, beating out Al Hayward, James Little and Paul Kaludjak. Hayward and Kaludjak were tied for second place with 314 votes apiece. Redfern replaces Elisapee Sheutiapik who resigned as mayor last month.

"I'm very honoured that the community has given me this opportunity," she said. "I promise to work hard and to be very committed to the city for the next couple of years."

Redfern said she plans to meet with council and city administration to see where things are at and prioritize the activities she and the city would like to do. She added she plans to lobby both the territorial and federal governments to access funding for infrastructure projects.

"I would like to see more information being provided to council and in turn council providing more information to its residents. That's definitely a priority," she said. "As a mayor, I would also like to do a scan of services that are available to our community members to ensure that the various levels of government are providing those services to our community members."

Iqaluit residents also elected a new councillor, Joanasie Akumalik, who got 757 votes, or 59 per cent. His closest rival was Stephen Mansell followed by Ed deVries. He replaces Natsiq Alainga-Kango, who unsuccessfully ran for the NTI presidency, finishing eighth out of 11 candidates with 434 votes.

Chief returning officer Kirt Ejesiak said the voter turnout rate was approximately 41 per cent, compared to 53 per cent in 2009.
