Among the guests who congratulated Janice McKenna on the opening of the funeral home was Mayor Gord Van Tighem.

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Yellowknife's first funeral home opened its doors to the community on Friday. Janice McKenna, owner of McKenna Funeral Services, greeted a small group of guests at her recently-opened funeral home, located at the corner of Forrest Drive and Burwash Drive.

In the past, McKenna met with families inside the quiet room at Stanton Territorial Hospital to make arrangements to mark the passing of loved ones.

McKenna's new funeral home is non-denominational - open to clients of any or no religious persuasion - a fact that was underscored by the blessings made by representatives of the NWT's Jewish, Hindu, Tlicho and Dene communities.
