High interest in funding programs

DENINU KU'E/FORT RESOLUTION - Amy Miersch, economic development officer in Fort Resolution, says she has received a lot of interest in several funding programs meant to stimulate the community's traditional economy.

Beginning in October, the department of Industry, Tourism and Investment began offering arts and crafts makers and harvesters - as well as kids interested in learning how to trap professionally - the opportunity to apply for funding to help with the cost of operations.

The deadline for funding passed on Friday, and "there's a lot of interest in all the programs," said Miersch, who administers the funding in Fort Resolution.

As Miersch described it, under the Take A Kid Trapping program, "the funding is provided for kids from six to 20 to go out on the land with trappers and harvesters and getting the whole experience of doing the skinning and pelting."
