IQALUIT - Qulliq Energy Corporation applied on Nov. 8 to Lorne Kusugak, the minister responsible for the power corporation, for the necessary permit to upgrade capacity at Iqaluit's power plant.

The proposed upgrade, pegged at $29.6 million, is expected to provide the city with enough power to serve its ever-increasing population until 2032, according to the corporation.

"The City of Iqaluit has experienced significant load growth over the past 10 years largely driven by the creation of the Nunavut territory and Iqaluit's designation as the capital city," read the corporation's application.

The application said the city's population is expected to reach 13,000 people by the year 2030. Once approved, the upgrade should be completed within three years, the application also stated.
