Repulse man charged with attempted murder

REPULSE BAY - Benjamin Malliki, a 19-year-old Repulse Bay man, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a seven-hour standoff on Sept. 28, during which two shots were fired at police officers.

Malliki was also charged with assault, assault with a weapon, and seven other Criminal Code-related charges. police were called to a reported assault at 2 p.m. near the community school and when police arrived, the suspect is accused of pointing a firearm at the officers while barricading himself inside his residence, said Staff Sgt. Stephen Bergerman.

Over the next three hours three shots were fired from a long gun, two toward police, according to Bergerman.

An emergency response team from Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet - including Bergerman - arrived in the late afternoon.

The team included a police dog, handler, a negotiator, critical incident commander and Rankin Inlet RCMP members. Four hours later Malliki surrendered peacefully at about 8:30 p.m.

There were no injuries to anyone involved. Malliki was arrested and jailed in Repulse Bay.

He was scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on Oct. 5, after press deadline..
