SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A former NWT Mine Training Society financial officer charged with stealing $18,039.45 from the society had her case adjourned again so that the court can consider her request to have the case transferred outside of the NWT.

Monica Audrey Casaway, 49, is also charged with eight related counts of transferring stolen money by writing cheques in her name from a training society bank account. The case has so far been before territorial court on Aug. 31 and Oct. 26. The matter was again adjourned by Judge Robert D. Gorin on Oct. 26 to Nov. 9.

Casaway, who was not in court on Tuesday, has yet to enter a plea on any of the charges. It is unclear where she wants the case transferred to, although she is living in Edmonton, where she is unemployed, according to the RCMP.

She is accused of having committed the offences between Aug. 17 and Nov. 12, 2007, all in Yellowknife.

After an investigation, the Yellowknife RCMP charged Casaway on April 1, 2008. She was issued a summons to appear at the Yellowknife RCMP detachment on May 7 and in court on May 8. She did neither.

On May 8 a warrant was issued for her arrest. On May 12, the Yellowknife RCMP updated the warrant to indicate officers were unable to locate her and they believed she had left the NWT.

On Aug. 8, 2010, two years after the arrest warrant was issued, Casaway turned herself in to the Yellowknife RCMP detachment to deal with the outstanding warrant, stated Const. Kathy Law in an Oct. 29 e-mail.

Casaway was released the same day on bail after posting $400. On Sept. 14, she had her bail amended to allow her to leave the NWT and report to the RCMP in Alberta by Sept. 20.

The case will resume again Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m. in territorial court where the possibility of granting her application and the status of the other eight charges will be discussed.
