The group is made up of students enrolled in the intercultural studies program, fourth year student Nova Nygren and group leader said. Every two years, the college sponsors students to visit communities in the North. "The goal of the trip is to see our first year students experience the North and Northern culture as much as they can and develop a heart and a passion for it," she said. "They can then come home and recognize what's going on in the North." Third-year student Kat Cardinal said it was the first time any of the students had been to Fort Simpson. "It's a first for all of us," she said. For some of the students, it was their first trip to the Northwest Territories. The team spent time learning about the cultural history of Fort Simpson, visiting classrooms and just hanging out with local kids, she said. Building relationships with youth in the community was another main goal of the visit, Nygren said. "We wanted to hang out with students and get to know how the students live, what the issues are and what they love about living in the North," she said. The team spent a lot of time with both the high school and elementary school students, Nygren said. "We were hanging out with kids on breaks and going for lunch with them," she said. The team was also interested in learning about the positive and negative aspects of life in the North. "What are the joys of being up here what are the hardships," she said. "We wanted to develop just a passion to come back." Teams of students were also visiting Hay River, Fort Resolution, Behchoko, Yellowknife and Forth Smith, Nygren said.
