KINNGAIT/CAPE DORSET - A number of unsecured firearms were seized for safety and storage reasons after two youths got into a fight in Cape Dorset, according to the RCMP.

RCMP Sgt. Jimmy Akavak stated police responded to a complaint of two youths fighting in the community at about 8:50 p.m. on Oct. 15.

One of the youths is accused of threatening to obtain and use a firearm to harm the other, according to Akavak. He added the male youth was located unarmed by police.

Akavak said police seized a number of unsecured firearms the youth had access to, due to improper safety and storage reasons.

The youth was arrested, charged with uttering threats and was released on conditions. He is set to make his first youth court appearance in Cape Dorset next month.

"The RCMP will be undertaking efforts this week in working with the community of Cape Dorset to educate residents on the requirements in making their firearms safe and secure within their community," stated Akavak in a press release.
