The Grade 9 student said he was the best player on his team.

"I would have to say I'm the best because I learn from my mistakes and do everything correctly," he said. "I work hard."

His spiking ability is deadly, according to him.

He welcomed the challenge of 12 competing teams attending the annual tournament on Friday and Saturday at Samuel Hearne Secondary School (SHSS). Pleased that teams came from Fort McPherson, he acknowledged there were several talented up and coming players.

But Church did shine during Friday and Saturday's competition.

"I'm pretty sure I got an award," he said.

But when it comes right down do it that's not with this tournament is all about.

"It's great. Everyone can play," he said. "We try our best. We look to have fun. Our team is really competitive and win or lose, we're happy."

Dave Halpine, SHSS gym teacher and tournament organizer, agreed with his student's measure of the tournament, but wasn't prepared to

fuel the flames of Church's ego.

"He's a good athlete and he's steady, consistent," said Halpine with a chuckle. "I'm not sure anyone is singing Chris's accolades," he added playfully.

On a more serious note, he said the tournament drew a total 13 teams, up two from last year. Though Fort McPherson came with sparse senior teams, the junior girls and boys teams arrived fully stocked. Both earned a spot in the championship game in their respective divisions.

He said that's just another sign that sport is growing in the Delta.

Halpine said the highlight of the tournament for him was seeing SHSS's senior boys team being split up and then playing well with their respective teams.

"They played off against each other in almost like a sanctioned game," he said. "It was exhilarating for us and balls were everywhere. The fans were oohing and aahing. It was great."
