Man vanishes in Kugluktuk
Jacket, gloves found by Coppermine River

KUGLUKTUK/COPPERMINE - The search has been scaled back for a man who vanished in Kugluktuk a week ago, leaving behind his jacket and gloves on the riverside.

Clinton Panegyuk, 21, was last seen walking near the Co-op near midnight on Sept. 28. According to the RCMP, his parents discovered him missing when they returned from a trip to their cabin. The next day they found his jacket and gloves by the riverside.

However, despite an extensive ground and water search, no other trace of the man has been found. Police and the local search and rescue team conducted a foot search around the shoreline and the community, and knocked on doors in neighbourhoods throughout the town.

"Essentially by the end of the first day he was missing, the entire community was aware and was looking for him," said Const. Brent Harris of the Kugluktuk RCMP.

Four boats scoured the bay and the river. The water search was called off Oct. 1, but the land search continues on a random basis.

Harris said though the location of the man’s jacket and gloves may indicate he went into the water, that can’t be substantiated.

"There was no indication of his being upset or distressed by anything at the time of his disappearance," said Harris.

He said the police also had no reason to suspect foul play.

He added most of the search and rescue cases the detachment deals with are classified as overdue travellers.

"This is a unique case in the fact that it truly does appear as if he’s completely gone missing," said Harris.

Panegyuk is described as five-foot-seven, 141 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a slender build. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Kugluktuk RCMP.
