Cash stolen from canteen

INUVIK - Police are asking for the public's help solving a theft that occurred at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex last weekend.

Sometime between the evening of July 30 and the morning of Aug. 3, police believe someone pried open two doors of the complex's concession stand and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. Nothing else was taken or damaged.

"We can't really pinpoint when it took place," said Inuvik RCMP Const. Mike Peters, who is investigating the incident. He said police were not prepared to say how much money was stolen.

"We're just going to hold some evidence back, because we want to make sure that we have evidence that only the suspect would know," he said, adding that anyone with information should call RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Concession stand owner Larry Allum said Tuesday afternoon he had no idea who could be responsible for the break-in, as the canteen was closed throughout the long weekend.

"There's too much going on, too many unexplained questions," he said, adding that because nothing else in the area appeared to be damaged, "they knew exactly what they were going for."

Allum said he was surprised because the concession stand has never been broken into before.

The break-in marred an otherwise quiet weekend for Inuvik RCMP, who had 27 prisoners from Friday to Monday, down slightly from 33 prisoners during last year's August long weekend.

Most of the calls police dealt with were related to intoxication or domestic violence, said Staff Sgt. Cliff McKay.

"We had our usual drunks, but our counts for intoxicated people were down as well - I think because a lot of people were out of town this weekend," he said. "Everybody was pretty respectful."
