RANKIN INLET - The second annual Al Burrill Memorial golf tournament will be held in Rankin Inlet on Aug. 26.

The event honours the memory of Burrill, who was a long-time supervisor of field operations (airport maintainer) at the Rankin airport.

Burrill passed away from a heart attack on Sept. 12, 2008.

In addition to the golf tourney, a raffle will be held for a pair of return tickets to Edmonton from Rankin courtesy of Canadian North.

The registration fee for the tourney is $40, with all proceeds being donated to the Rankin Inlet RCMP Christmas Hamper fund.

A maximum of 36 golfers are being accepted for the tournament.

Nav Canada flight service specialist Jeff Kuharski said he and fellow Nav Canada employees Josh Milburn and Rick Lepage have worked hard on the golfing event to honour Burrill's memory.

He said Burrill was a great person around the airport, and would help anyone in town who needed it.

"We wanted to do something in his honour, and we decided to dedicate the golf tournament to him this past year," said Kuharski.

"We had 16 or 17 golfers at the inaugural event and we're hoping to more than double that number this year.

"We had Al's widow (Diana) and son (Chadd) come from British Columbia to the first event and they seemed pretty happy with the way it went.

"We didn't have very nice weather this past year, but it was still nice to get out for a bit of golfing and then enjoy a nice supper at the Legion following the event."

Kuharski said this year's event is better organized and being held a little earlier.

He said the community has really stepped up to support the event.

"All the prizes we're giving away have been donated by the local airlines and local businesses around town.

"Both the tournament registration fees and the raffle money we collect will be donated to the RCMP's Christmas Hamper.

"There were also a number of companies that decided, in lieu of prizes, to donate money directly to the Christmas Hamper fund under Al's name.

"Other companies are sponsoring holes during the golf tournament, and $30 from each sponsored hole will go to the hamper, as well."
