The Boeing 737 touched down safely even though it had been flying on one engine for about an hour.

Sarah Crocker, a passenger on the flight from Yellowknife, said about half an hour into the flight, the pilot announced the aircraft was only running on one engine and had turned around.

"There wasn't any panic or anything, it was a pretty calm atmosphere," she said.

Police, fire and ambulance workers were all standing by at the airport waiting for the plane to land, but they were not needed.

Steve Loutitt, manager of the Yellowknife Airport, said the investigation into the mechanical failure is now up to Canadian North and Transport Canada.

"From our point of view the incident is now closed," he said.

See Wednesday's Yellowknifer for more details on the incident.
